Cursory review of Thin Wild Mercury’s new New York collection

I got my sample set yesterday and here’s my ranking based on first impressions. These are totally subject to change—my ranking for the Los Angeles collection changes like, weekly.

  1. Girl of the Year. She is THAT BITCH. I’m a slut for anything incense, so I knew I’d like this one. She is dark and woodsy and sexy. If you like Whisky, I think you’ll gravitate towards this one. I was a little wary of the lipstick note, but it doesn’t smell synthetic at all. This scent actually reminds me of one of Imaginary Authors scents, but I can’t remember which one. Maybe Memoirs of a Trespasser or Whispered Myths? My only gripe is that she didn’t seem to last as long as the others.

  2. Chelsea Staircase. Anything lemony smells like kitchen cleaner to me, so I wasn’t in love at first spritz. But holy f***, when this dried down she was absolutely GORGINA. Floral but dusty. Antique-smelling, but not in an old lady kind of way. I’d recommend this for Laurel Canyon lovers.

  3. 34 Bohemian Cafes. Definitely the most masculine of the bunch. Very leathery if you’re into that. I’d wear this as a night scent, but it’s a little heavy for daytime. Great for rock shows and grimy bars. And, well, bohemian cafes.

  4. Sheep Meadow. I wanted to love this one because lavender is also a fave of mine, but the blueberry note was just too overpowering and gave scented markers. It was nice after a few hours when the blueberry dried down and more of the earthy notes came through. I actually might try layering this with 34 Bohemian Cafes to bring down the fruitiness a little. If it wasn’t apparent, I’m not a fruity gal (at least in one sense of the word lol).

Overall, I have a preference for the Los Angeles collection, but these are still way better and more unique than anything you can find at Sephora, and I think very fairly priced. Cathleen is a mad genius and I hope she keeps experimenting. Maybe San Francisco next?
