Reviews of my winners from an obsessive sampler

Female/29. From someone who has sampled over 100 scents this year, I’m super picky and don’t want anything that smells remotely similar to anything I already own. If the sample passes the first “round” then I’ll buy a decant or mini bottle. I only have 5 full sized bottles. I’m still not very good at identifying specific notes, but this has been such a fun hobby and I’m happy with my assortment I’ve curated for myself for all occasions and feelings and memories. Since I don’t spray a lot, do sample a lot, and do rotate a lot, the tiny decants last me quite a long time. I’m always on the hunt for new exciting scents and have about 8 more on my list I want to smell eventually, but for now I’ll be working on buying full sized bottles of my favorite decants. Hopefully these reviews will help anyone searching for impressions of these specific scents. Notes are from Fragrantica.

Female/29. From someone who has sampled over 100 scents this year, I’m super picky and don’t want anything that smells remotely similar to anything I already own. If the sample passes the first “round” then I’ll buy a decant or mini bottle. I only have 5 full sized bottles. Eauso Vert – Purple Noon

Notes: ginger, Coconut, Neroli, Orange, Bergamot, Geranium, Ylang, Musk, tuberose, Vanilla, Orris

Full bottle. This is my one true love. I haven’t smelled anything like it and it’s relatively unknown. I’m bad at picking out notes and I can’t smell the ginger or coconut, but it’s such a creamy, sunset scent. It’s sweet but not Meliora sweet. It lasts all day and perfect for any weather. This is my everyday fragrance and I bought a full bottle halfway through my original sample. Love love love it

MFK – BR 540

Notes: saffron, Jasmine, Cedar, Amber, Fir resin

Full bottle. I love this one but I do smell it or its clones everywhere. I like to mix it with JHAG Not a Perfume and that helps tone down the sweetness. This lasts forever and I love how it smells on my clothes. I’m taking a break from this one though. I’m also avoiding the saffron/jasmine/amber combo as I find the dry downs are just too similar to 540!

Juliette Has a Gun – Not a Perfume

Notes: Cetalox

Full bottle. Not a Perfume was one of my first “niche” scents. It’s my favorite amber/ISO-E/skin scent. I’ve tried many others (essentric molecules, glossier You, another 13, nemat oil) and NAP is by far my favorite. Maybe just the way it reacts with my skin chemistry. It just elevates your own scent and blends into your skin where I feel like the others are just amber scented perfumes and sit on your skin. I use NAP on lazy days and I also sometimes layer it with about every other perfume I have. It goes with everything and lasts forever. I feel like you only need one of these types of amber scents so I try to avoid anything too similar.

Gucci – Memoire D’une Odeur

Notes: chamomile, Bitter almond, Musk, Jasmine, Sandalwood, Cedar, Vanilla

Full (small) bottle. I had a sample, thought it was meh and tossed it. I kept thinking about it though and I love the bottle so I ordered a small one. It’s unique but also nostalgic and not sure why. Unfortunately it smells a little grandma to me. I’m just getting a generic white floral and I typically don’t like white florals. Not sure what I’ll do with this, maybe will try to layer with Not a Perfume to spice it up.

Burberry – Sport for Women

Notes: orange, Salt, Ginger, Honeysuckle, Magnolia, Petitgrain, Cedar, Musk, Vetiver

Full (small) bottle. Discontinued. Such a unique scent. The men’s version is unique as well. I love these and I only have 1/8 of the bottle left so I’m saving it for nostalgia. Again I’m not good with notes and I feel like I’m getting some berry notes, but those aren’t listed. I can pick out the honeysuckle. I haven’t found anything comparable. To me it’s a fall scent.

CH – Very Good Girl Glam

Notes: Cherry, Almond, Rose, Lily, Bourbon vanilla, Vetiver

Rollerball. Impulse buy. I thought it was unique for a “mall” scent. I really like the cherry in this even though it’s a little artificial. It smells pink and sparkly and girly. The dry down has an interesting lingering note that I can’t figure out, maybe it’s the “bourbon vanilla”. Probably won’t buy a full bottle though

PDM – Meliora

Notes: Black currant, Red berries, Cassis, Rose, Lily of the valley, Ylang, Musk, Vanilla

Small decant. To me the bottle doesn’t match the scent. This one smells “purple” to me but the bottle is cream. Very jammy, berry, VERY sweet for the first hour or so. Slowly tones down to a nice light musk with a little berry left over. Lasts most of the day. Perfect for a hot day. Probably won’t buy a full bottle as it’s too expensive and not unique enough for me.

Tommy Girl

Notes: apple, camellia, mandarin, black currant, Lemon, honeysuckle, rose, grapefruit, Lily, mint, violet, Magnolia, Jasmine, cedar, sandalwood, leather

Rollerball. I’m keeping this for nostalgia. This was my high school fragrance and at the time I thought it was amazing. I still like it but I like my other scents more. This is a very bright, lemony, honeysuckle with some white floral in the background. I don’t get any wood or leather like it says. It’s such a youthful scent.

Atelier- Clementine California

Notes: clementine, Mandarin, Juniper, Basil, Star anise, Pepper, Cypress, Vetiver, Sandalwood

Mini spray. I wore this today and it has lasted allllll day. The citrus has not disappeared and it has a nice herbal, slightly peppery background. This is great for an every day scent. So bright and sparkly. In my mind though I group this as similar to the Aerin honeysuckle as far as when I’d wear it, and between these two, I’d rather buy this one in full size.

Amouage – Guidance

Notes: Pear, Hazelnut, Rose, Saffron, Jasmine, Amber, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Labdanum, Akigalawood, Osmanthus, Frankincense /olibanum

Tiny decant. Incredibly strong and long lasting. At first I didn’t like it but then I kept thinking about it and I feel like it could be a signature scent. It’s extremely creamy, smooth sandalwood, vanilla and amber. The frankincense (I think?) is very light and fluffy. Very feminine but a drop is all you need. I just ordered a larger decant and that will last me forever.

Memo Paris – Eau De Memo

Notes: Green tea, Bergamot, Lemon, Jasmine, Iris, Saffron, Leather, Moss, White musk

Tiny decant. One of my newest and one I discovered via this sub. This smells professional, clean, “on the go” – the leather is potent but I really like it. The leather also softens after a bit. It smells like new clothes, or like the area at a fancy department store between the bags and the clothes. It’s so upscale. The Jasmine/saffron gives me a tiiiiiiiny bit of 540 after a few hours, however it dries completely different on my clothes and lasts way longer. The smell of expensive clothes doesn’t go well with leggings and a hoodie, so I’ve been wearing this when I feel more put together overall and it really boosts that feeling. A full bottle is so expensive so I’ll either buy a mini spray from Memo directly or a small decant from scent split

Penhaligons – Coveted Duchess Rose

Notes: Rose, musk, wood notes, mandarin

Tiny decant. I usually hate rose scents. I don’t like smelling “like” something specific and super rosy scents do that for me. However this one dries down in that familiar Penhaligons “base” which is like a peppery skin scent. The rose isn’t subtle but to me it smells dark and sweet at the same time. I can’t see this being a casual scent for me. I might buy a larger decant but not a full bottle.

Hermes – Un Jardin Sur De Nil

Notes: Grapefruit, Mango, Tomato, Carrot, Lotus, bullrush, Orange, Hyacinth, Peony, Musk, Iris, Incense, Labdanum, Cinnamon

Mini splash bottle. This is my newest. This smells so simple and unique. Like teal water. I think it’s perfect for messy bun days. It turns into a skin scent but not an amber one. Just clean, airy, and watery. The tomato note is there for a bit but doesn’t last long. The dry down lasts most of the day. This small bottle will last me a long time but I’ll probably buy a full size eventually.

Diptyque – Geranium Odorata

Notes: geranium, Bergamot, Vetiver, Cedar, Pink pepper, Tonka bean

Small decant. Smells “red”, strong cedar which I like. After an hour or so the floral disappears into mainly freshly cut cedar. Lasts about half a day, wish it lasted longer. Spicy in a feminine way. Perfect fall scent. Will buy full bottle!

Gucci – Gorgeous Gardenia

Notes: pear, Red berries, Mandarin, Gardenia, Jasmine, Brown sugar, Patchouli, Frangipani

Mini bottle. Impulse purchase and the only perfume I have with patchouli. I dislike anything that smells like a hippie incense store and patchouli usually does that for me, however it’s not really detectable here. This one is a little generic but I like how floral yet spicy it is, which is probably the wrong term. It’s a little sharp and I don’t reach for it often. I layer with Not a Perfume to soften it up a bit.

Aerin – Mediterranean Honeysuckle

Notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot, Lily of the valley, Mandarin, Jasmine, Gardenia

Mini splash bottle. So clean and fresh. Smells just like honeysuckle which is nostalgic to me. A tiny bit citrus which tones down the white floralness which I typically don’t like. This lasts about half a day. Perfect for spring and summer. Won’t get a full bottle though.

Penhaligons – Juniper Sling

Notes: Juniper, Orange, Angelica, Cinnamon, Pepper, Cardamom, Leather, Orris, Vetiver, Sugar, Cherry, Amber

Mini splash bottle. Yes this is marketed to men but I absolutely love this and would buy the full bottle if only it lasted longer. It’s the sweetest black pepper which turns into a spicy skin scent. If anyone has played the Rusty Lake games, this smells like that. So unique and I feel like the silver bottle really looks like how it smells, if that makes sense. The top notes go away in like 30 minutes, and all of it is gone within 1-2 hours. If they could make it last longer I would buy a full size. Perfect winter scent but really any time of year works.
